RF Cables for Antennas
RF connector or radio frequencies cables are generally made of coaxial cable, a cable that carries two metal leads, one inside the other. The two wires do not carry two different signals; instead, they carry the power and ground for a single signal, with the ground (outside) cable providing limited shielding from radio interference. RF cables are designed to transmit information via radio frequencies from one place to another.
Most RF cables have a centre core element that acts as the primary conductor for the signal being transferred over them. This core conductor is generally a singular, solid wire of copper, which is one of the best conductors. The copper wire protrudes from both ends of the RF cable and connects directly to the output source for the antenna and the input source for the receiver. This connection allows the free-flowing signal to be transferred without interruption. This is also a vulnerable element when it comes to transferring the signal, because the core's conductive properties are non-discriminatory, meaning it does not filter out undesired frequency interferences.
RF cables are found in two flavours: 75-ohm coaxial and 300-ohm parallel. This second type was used by old terrestrial broadcasting antennas, but even this kind of antenna use the 75-ohm coaxial cable nowadays.
Most antennas come with a length of RF cable attached to them; however, where the antennas need to be at some distance from the receiver an RF cable will be required.
RF cables can be identified by the connectors at the end of the cables. RF cable connectors have a single pin that plugs into the RF input on a TV or other device and a threaded piece of metal around the connector that can be used to secure the cable to the RF input port. RF cables can connect the antenna, VCR, TV, DVD player and DVR for example.
